Henry Pope

Henry Pope will be named the next athletic director of Birmingham City Schools, according to multiple sources.

Pope is currently one of the school system’s brightest young stars, splitting time as Wenonah’s athletic director, defensive coordinator on the football team and in the classroom as a math teacher.

A spokesperson for BCS was not immediately available.

Pope replaces local basketball legend Buck Johnson, who in September was fired as BCS athletic director. In 1982, Johnson earned “Mr. Basketball” honors while leading Hayes to back-to-back state titles. Later he played for the University of Alabama and in the NBA, the Houston Rockets.

This fall, Pope teamed with Wenonah football coach Ronald Cheatham to build a defense which pushed the Dragons into the Class 5A state championship game.

He’s also known at Wenonah for his business savvy. Pope is a product of Jackson-Olin.
