Wenonah coach Ronald Cheatham has a simple plan every week: The opponent can’t win if it can’t score.
“We have a philosophy here at Wenonah – if you play defense, you always have a chance to win,” he said.
Just look at tonight’s 33-6 victory over Fairfield as a perfect example.
The Dragons (6-2 overall, 5-1 in Class 5A, Region 5) allowed just 124 yards, and Anthony Brown intercepted two passes. Fairhope managed just 45 yards on 22 rushes. Cornelius Gibbs also fell on a Fairfield (5-3, 4-2) fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.
Stat sheet: Wenonah’s Telvin Miller ran eight times for 95 yards and an 11-yard TD. … Wenonah QB Carlos Rogers finished 12-of-19 passing for 219 yards and three touchdowns and three interceptions. … Fairfield’s Tez Spencer scored the Tigers’ lone touchdown on a 2-yard run.
Did you know?: Fairfield’s Dexter Boykin intercepted two passes, including one he returned 62 yards to set up Spencer’s TD run.
Coachspeak: “We made the plays that we needed to make, and we made more plays than they did.” – Cheatham
They said it …: “I was excited when the game started, and coach told me to calm down, and when I did, I was able to make plays that led to touchdowns.” – Rogers
“Offensively, we couldn’t move the football.” – Fairfield coach L.C. Cole
Next week: Wenonah plays at St. Clair County.
